My name is Katy Margison & I am the owner of Athena Nutrition.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration and am a multi-certified nutrition coach. I compete locally and nationally in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. I've worked with many people and athletes just like you with all different levels of goals. I love nothing more than helping people find freedom, confidence, and empowerment by developing healthier habits with their nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle.
I have been an athlete/pursued athletic endeavors most of my adult life, starting with softball in high school. After several years (through my undergrad studies) of going to Planet Fitness, I found myself uninspired, not achieving my goals, and not feeling challenged. I googled gyms near me and found this place about 10 minutes away teaching “CrossFit” (had no idea what that was but it seemed cool).
I joined Lake George CrossFit (now Lake George Community Fitness) in 2012 and never looked back. I have competed in over a dozen local and regional competitions and to this day still enjoy jumping in on the daily workout with a class. In 2021, I decided to try out Olympic weightlifting. I quickly fell in love with the process and the grind of training to earn one more kilo. After my first USAW meet in August of 2021, I was hooked. I have competed in 8 meets, 2 of them nationally, and recently earned a gold medal in my age group and weight class at NYS Weightlifting Championships!
Fitness and athletic pursuits have never been a struggle for me, but my nutrition was always “the thing” that held me back. I was never consistent for more than a few months and would engage in 28-day challenges, the Paleo diet, Whole 30, and other attempts at trying to find the “diet” that worked for me. What I didn’t realize at the time was treating weight loss like this restrictive program or diet was not the right mindset or approach.
Alcohol and drugs also held me back. Hence my social media platform… The Sober Weightlifter. I always enjoyed drinking through my early to mid 20s which grew to a problematic relationship with alcohol in my late 20s. I did get sober for a little over 3 months in 2018 and thought I could moderate. Throughout most of 2019 - 2023, I drank more and more, engaged in illegal drug use, and truly developed an addiction to both alcohol and drugs. I decided to get sober on January 1, 2024, and never looked back.
My life story, education, and real-world experiences are what led to my passion for helping others in the nutrition and fitness industry. I worked as a CF-L2 CrossFit trainer for over 6 years, USAW L-1 coach for almost a year, and have been cooking up a storm for most of my life (my decade plus of recipes in MyFitnessPal is a thing of beauty!) I have also spent the majority of my career in the nonprofit healthcare sector and have my own healthcare consulting business focused on project management and telehealth!
I have learned so much this year as a sober person about what I want to be able to offer to clients. The specific type of coaching, the personalized connection, the support, the individuality of it all, these are all a vital part of nutrition coaching and how I want to support YOU.
I believe that nutrition is about so much more than just the food we eat and that building habits in all areas of our lives is what creates long-term change. One of my biggest missions as a coach is to encourage my clients to embrace their own journey and to recognize that our health is personal, and our challenges and experiences are our own. I believe that reaching your goals can be enjoyable - no crash diets, perfectionism, or “bad” foods list required.
